We're excited to announce that Alation now supports Power BI within Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft’s unified platform to streamline and centralize data workflows. This integration reflects Alation’s commitment to becoming the go-to metadata hub for the Fabric ecosystem, helping organizations navigate the rapidly changing landscape of data management and maximize the value of their data.

What is Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric is a transformative data platform that simplifies data management and breaks down silos between data tools and teams. It unifies several core data services—like Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Warehouse, and Real-Time Analytics—on a shared, SaaS foundation. This architecture enhances workflow efficiencies and provides a seamless user experience for data engineers, scientists, and analysts alike.

As businesses migrate from on-prem or Azure-based tools to Microsoft Fabric, they face challenges in transitioning workflows, maintaining visibility into their data pipelines, and realizing the full value of their investments. Alation’s integration with Power BI in Microsoft Fabric is the first step in addressing these critical needs by enabling seamless data governance and actionable insights. By engaging early in your journey migrating to Fabric, Alation will help you ensure a smooth transition with trusted analytics while empowering teams to trace pipeline impact and govern data assets effectively.

Alation’s Power BI integration in Microsoft Fabric

With Alation’s new integration, users can now catalog and trace the lineage of Power BI assets in Microsoft Fabric. This enables data teams to gain a clear, end-to-end view of data’s journey, from its source to final visualizations in Power BI:

Alation’s metadata governance capabilities seamlessly catalog and govern Power BI datasets and their upstream data sources, empowering data users to deliver trusted analytics throughout the organization.

With this new integration, Alation ensures dataset-centric metadata governance, which enables:

  • Direct connections to external data sources (e.g., Snowflake): For traditional Power BI datasets that connect directly to external data sources like Snowflake, Alation delivers comprehensive metadata extraction, cataloging, and end-to-end lineage. Users can now trace the journey of data from Snowflake through Power BI datasets and onto associated reports, providing detailed visibility into data transformations and dependencies.

  • Datasets leveraging Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse Shortcuts: For Power BI datasets created using Microsoft Fabric's Lakehouse shortcuts, Alation captures metadata for Power BI objects—such as tables, reports, and dashboards—up to the SQL Analytics Endpoint tied to the Lakehouse. (This integration provides visibility into Power BI assets and their relationship with the Endpoint but does not extend lineage upstream to the original external data source, such as Snowflake.)

This integration is the first step in positioning Alation as a metadata hub across the Fabric ecosystem. By cataloging and governing Power BI assets in Alation, organizations will be able to trace datasets, monitor their cross-system usage, and assess quality metrics. For example, financial institutions can leverage Alation to ensure compliance by monitoring sensitive data flows, while healthcare providers can track data lineage for regulatory reporting.

Expanding Alation’s reach within Microsoft Fabric

Looking ahead, Alation plans to extend support to other Fabric components like OneLake, Lakehouse, and Data Warehouse. By collaborating closely with Microsoft and our customers, Alation remains flexible and committed to aligning with the ecosystem’s growth, enabling deeper cross-system insights and seamless governance.

While this initial integration focuses on Power BI, Alation is committed to supporting unified data solutions within Fabric. As the ecosystem matures, we will continue to explore ways to unlock the full potential of data for our customers and future-proof their data strategies.
