Case Study

Background

What’s the data environment like at LendUp?

Michael Lempner, Head of Data: Data is the lifeblood of every aspect of what we do from acquiring and managing customers to managing risk and determining fraud. We have more than 100 data sources, including Redshift for our data warehouse, and we’re also starting to work to set up a data lake in S3.

What are your current data initiatives and projects?

Michael: We’re really trying to empower our business which means that data needs to be more usable and consumable. We’re trying to make data analytics less difficult, particularly trying to figure out what data exists and what the data is saying. Right now our users are spending 80% of their time gathering data and making sense out of it and only 20% generating the insights they need for the business. We’re looking to flip that ratio.

What are you hoping to do with Alation that you are not able to do now?

Michael: We’re looking to Alation to help us document the data we have, and, more importantly, put it to practical use in order to meet our business needs. We’re also working to customize some of the underlying data structures to provide additional information. We want to know when the data was last refreshed, what the data’s lineage is, and what logic is being applied.

LendUp + Alation

At LendUp, Alation has been able to:

  • Enable users to know where to go to find information, get definitions and sample values
  • Help users discover data and get comfortable exploring the data beyond finding a table
  • Publish recurring queries and share them among people looking at the same dataset
  • Understand which data is being used, which data is considered dormant data
  • Ensure people use the latest dataset and don’t inadvertently use dormant data
  • Help users understand the quality of the data at a glance
  • Automate the naming of columns in the query editor and suggesting common joins and queries
  • Reduce the educational overhead from a data operations standpoint

How will Alation help LendUp continue to be data-driven?

Michael: We are trying to make data much more usable and consumable by our business. Currently, working with data is one of the hardest parts of the job. Users have trouble figuring out what data exists and what the data is telling them. We are really starting to tap into the potential of how we can leverage Alation within LendUp. Alation is a great way for our users to not only explore and discover the information, but also use it and collaborate in a more efficient way to make decisions that impact the business. Alation is helping us understand the use cases we have and providing a more efficient way to get at the information we need.
