“I’ve been looking at the sky, ‘Cause it’s gettin’ me high… Yes I’m back in black”

– Back In Black, AC/DC 1

AC/DC, the Australian rock and roll band shot to international fame with Back in Black, their best-selling album of all times. The Back in Black world tour was a glorious rock and roll spectacle that featured a one-ton bronze “Hell’s Bell,” which was lowered to the stage each night.

Channeling the spirit of AC/DC’s iconic album and tour, Alation has set out on its own world tour. Following an unprecedented summer of accolades that have helped establish Alation as the leader in emerging data catalog category, we are in the midst of a nine-show tour. After a blockbuster premiere at the Strata Data Conference in New York, the tour will take us to six different states and across the pond to London.

In a nod to AC/DC, a wink to Gartner’s research report, Data Catalogs Are the New Black in Data Management and Analytics, and inspiration from the inaugural Forrester Wave™: Machine Learning Data Catalogs, we have temporarily set aside our Alation orange and have been rocking “black” for the Alation MLDC World Tour.

The MLDC World Tour Begins

Alation launched its MLDC World Tour at the Strata Data Conference in New York with a big bang! We unveiled a professional grade, bullet proof Alation Arena where folks got to fight robots in real-time. The BattleBots’ champs, Zachary Lytle and Diana Tarlson, were on site. Our customers — Munich Re and Pfizer — spoke to packed rooms about the innovation they have been able to achieve with the Alation Data Catalog as a core part of their analytics platforms.

After putting up a scintillating show at the Strata Data Conference in New York, Alation is touring Dreamforce in San Francisco. Here we are showcasing how the Alation Data Catalog and its integration with Salesforce Einstein Analytics can drive a data-driven Sales Operations.

The next stops on the MLDC World Tour include Data Transparency in Washington, Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in Orlando, Teradata Analytics Universe in Las Vegas, Tableau in New Orleans, Big Data LDN in London, TDWI in Orlando and Forrester Data Strategy & Insights in Orlando, again.

Data Catalogs Are the New Black

Gartner report Data Catalogs are the New Black in Data Management and Analytics

Gartner’s report, Data Catalogs Are the New Black in Data Management and Analytics, inspired our new penchant for the color black. For the first time, a major analyst firm had put into writing what we have been seeing with our 100 plus production customers: A data catalog can change the way people find, understand and trust data, helping them overcome the challenges that come with self-service environments. According to the report, “Demand for data catalogs is soaring as organizations struggle to inventory distributed data assets to facilitate data monetization and conform to regulations.”2

Gartner followed up by naming Alation as a Leader in the Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions3for the second year in a row based on our ability to execute and completeness of vision. The tour stops at Gartner Symposium next month, where you can learn first hand why Gartner believes “Data Catalogs are the New Black.”

The Forrester Wave™: Machine Learning Data Catalogs

Forrester report Machine Learning Data Catalogs

For the “MLDC” part of the MLDC World Tour, we drew inspiration from the inaugural Forrester Wave™: Machine Learning Data Catalogs4. Forrester has put a stamp on machine learning data catalogs by calling it a category of its own and credited Alation with starting and leading the MLDC trend.

“Clients considering Alation will find a strong MLDC to help understand and make sense of the vast sources that exist on-premises, in the cloud, and across their legacy and modern systems,” said Michele Goetz, principal analyst at Forrester and the author of the report. “Enterprises are… turning to data catalogs to democratize access to data, enable tribal data knowledge to curate information, apply data policies, and activate all data for business value quickly.”

In a recent webinar,“Ready for a Machine Learning Data Catalog?” Michele Goetz further discussed the findings and trends that have led to the rise of MLDCs, and how they build a solid foundation for data architecture of the future. Stephanie McReynolds, vice president of marketing at Alation shared practical use cases of how organizations like Munich Re, Pfizer and eBay are leveraging a machine learning data catalog to boost analyst productivity, create innovative products, solve difficult problems, and embrace self-service.
