The Year Enterprises Embraced the Data Catalog

A recent report from Gartner, Data Catalogs Are the New Black in Data Management and Analytics finds that, “Demand for data catalogs is soaring as organizations struggle to inventory distributed data assets to facilitate data monetization and conform to regulations.”* The trend mirrors demand for Alation.Organizations of all sizes are making the enterprise data catalog a core component of their data organizations. Innovative organizations, like Salesforce, American Express and PepsiCo, are leveraging the Alation enterprise data catalog to move from process-centric to data-driven enterprises.

Last year was a banner year for the company, capped by our strongest quarter to-date. In our financial Q4 2017 alone, we added 23 new customers. In 2017, the Alation team doubled in size, and we expanded our presence in EMEA and APAC. Alation was the top-ranked data catalog in the Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Wisdom of Crowds® Data Catalog Market Study. We were also named a Leader in the 2017 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Metadata Management Solutions**.

But no matter which way the winds of a trend are blowing, this kind of success doesn’t come without an incredible team, amazing execution and a clear mission. Leadership counts, and we’re proud to recognize two of our leaders.

My co-founder, Aaron Kalb, is now vice president of design and strategic initiatives. Aaron is one of the most dynamic people I know. From overseeing the product team to leading our weekly company meetings, he has touched nearly every facet of the company. Aaron will continue to drive our long-term vision for the product while leading the design team to maintain the high-bar we’ve set for the Alation user experience. Aaron will ensure that we are not only meeting the needs of customers today but are also prepared for data cataloging’s long trajectory.

I’m also delighted to announce that Anand Aidasani has been promoted to vice president of sales. Anand was our very first account executive at Alation and has been with us for nearly four years. In that time, he has made an incredible impact, personally recruiting the majority of our early customers. As both a leader and account executive, he has helped to drive our strong revenue growth and forge trusted partnerships with clients. Anand was a major force behind our incredible fourth quarter results.

Along with recognizing our team, we are also deepening our executive team. Aaron’s promotion opened a new opportunity to add a new vice president of product management to our executive team. Helen Foo, an entrepreneur, investor, and experienced product manager, has joined as vice president of product management. Helen understands implicitly what it takes to meet the needs of enterprises and create enduring companies. Her expertise in managing products delivered to some of the world’s largest financial services customers will help Alation deliver the industry’s best enterprise data catalog. Along with the addition of Ken Hoang as vice president of strategy and alliances announced earlier this month, we are well positioned to continue to take advantage of the sizeable market opportunity.

While I’m thrilled to see the Alation team grow and mature, not all companies are built in a straight line. My co-founder and friend Venky Ganti will be leaving Alation. From our early brainstorms on how to solve the “enterprise data problem” to becoming the leader in enterprise data catalogs, the company wouldn’t be what it is today without Venky’s vision and guidance. Venky will still lend his counsel as a member of our board of directors, and I look forward to partnering with him as he sets off his next adventure.

As strong as 2017 was, we are looking towards an even stronger 2018. The industry is recognizing that a data catalog is a central component of a successful data strategy. Our team is growing and maturing. And, we continue to forge strong relationships with customers and partners. Enterprise data catalogs will fundamentally change the way data consumers, creators and stewards find, understand and trust data. And, we are committed to supporting that change with a single platform, automated by intelligence but built for human collaboration.
